How can we help you?
Wero
What is Wero, how does it work and who can use it?
Wero is a European payment solution integrated into your Keytrade Bank app that allows you to send and receive money instantly, 24/7.
- To receive money: Share a self-generated QR code with the payer (or receive funds directly if your mobile number is linked).
- To send money: Scan a QR code, enter a mobile number manually, or choose a contact from your address book.
Wero is available to all customers aged 18 and over holding a Keytrade Bank current account. Currently, Keytrade Bank only supports person-to-person (P2P) transfers; online and in-store payments will be added by us in a later phase.
What is the difference between a payment via Wero, a regular bank transfer and Bancontact Pay?
Wero works just like an instant SEPA transfer, but without an IBAN. A mobile number or QR code is all you need. Bancontact Pay is designed for in-store and online purchases, whereas Wero focuses on direct payments between individuals.
Is Wero free?
Yes. Sending and receiving money via Wero at Keytrade Bank is completely free.
How do you activate Wero?
You need access to the Keytrade Bank app, your own current account, and you must be 18 or older.
To activate: Open the app and sign in, tap the Wero banner (or go to More > Linked payment methods), and follow the prompts. Linking your mobile number or contacts is optional. Activation takes 2 minutes and works immediately.
Which app version is required to use Wero?
To use Wero, you need version 6.8.4 of the Keytrade Bank app or a later version. Please make sure to update your app via the App Store or Google Play Store.
Which of your accounts are linked to Wero?
Upon activation, all your eligible current accounts are automatically linked. You can use any of them to send money or scan/generate QR codes. However, only one bank account can be linked to your mobile number at a time.
Do you need to share your mobile number to use Wero?
No, this is optional. Without linking your number, you can still send and receive money using QR codes. If you do link your number, other Wero users can send you money directly without needing to scan a QR code.
How do you manage Wero?
Manage your settings in the app via More > Linked payment methods > Manage Wero.
- Mobile number already in use? If your number is linked to Wero at another bank, deactivate it there first.
- New mobile number? Update it first in your Keytrade Bank profile.
- Unlinking Wero only deletes your mobile number (QR codes will still work).
- Stopping Wero fully deactivates the service on all your accounts.
Can you reuse a QR code or send money to someone without Wero?
Reuse: No. Each QR code is strictly unique and valid for a single transaction. The code expires immediately after the payment has been successfully processed. Generate a new code for each payment.
Someone without Wero: Wero only works if both parties have activated the service at a participating bank. Alternatively, you can always fall back on a regular instant transfer via IBAN.
Can you use Wero for online payments, in-store payments or payment requests?
Not yet. For online and in-store purchases, you can still use Bancontact Pay mobile app (provided your Keytrade Bank card is registered for this).
Why can some QR codes not be scanned in dark mode?
Light QR codes on a dark background may not be recognized by the scanner. In this case, asking the other party to temporarily switch their app to light mode may resolve the issue.
Why isn't the message associated with my Wero payment displayed in my transaction details?
With Wero, the sender can include a personal message with the payment. Currently, the Keytrade Bank app does not yet support displaying these custom messages in your transaction details. Instead, a standardized transfer description is shown, formatted as "WERO <Beneficiary First Name Last Name>". Support for displaying custom payment messages will be added in a future version of the app.
What are the transaction limits and can you increase them?
Limits are set by Keytrade Bank and cannot be modified:
- Maximum 1000EUR per standard Wero transfer to a manually entered mobile number or to a contact from your address book (if you have granted the app access).
- Maximum 750EUR per transaction executed via scanning a QR code.
Therefore, please use a regular bank transfer for amounts exceeding these limits.
Is Wero secure and who can see your mobile number?
Yes. Every payment requires authentication via the Keytrade Bank app (biometrics or PIN) in compliance with the European PSD2 directive. Your data is strictly protected under privacy legislation (GDPR).
Your mobile number is hidden from other users. However, before confirmation, the sender will see the recipient's name. This is a regulatory requirement (Verification of Payee) to check if the money is going to the right person.
What should you do in case of suspected fraud?
Never approve a transaction or Wero confirmation code you did not initiate. This is likely a fraud attempt.
Keytrade Bank will never ask for your passwords, PIN codes, or Wero confirmation codes via email, SMS, or phone. Therefore, never share them. In case of suspected fraud, a suspicious message, or an unwanted call, contact our contact centre.
Can you cancel a Wero payment or get your money back after fraud?
No. Wero payments are processed instantly and are irrevocable. Always check the recipient and amount thoroughly before confirming. Have you fallen victim to fraud despite this? Please reach out to our contact centre.
What should you do if a payment fails or throws an error?
Verify that the recipient has activated Wero and that you have not exceeded your transaction limit. If you receive an error, always check your transaction history before trying again. The payment might have gone through despite the error message; checking first prevents accidental duplicate payments. If the problem persists, reach out to our contact centre.
