Not sure if it’s time to make your renovation plans a reality? Perhaps an extra financial push could finally convince you to. The fact is that you may be entitled to one or more attractive renovation grants.
Belgian renovation plans with a deadline
Ten years ago, we were still largely allowed to set the pace of our renovation plans ourselves. Today, the rules of the game have changed. The European climate targets oblige all Member States to make their building stock much more energy-efficient.
Our country therefore committed to achieving an average energy label A for homes by 2050. This means that lots of existing homes need to be thoroughly energy-efficiently renovated in a relatively short time. Renovation grants can help encourage people to get involved in this more quickly.
Timing can make a big difference
Although the Belgian grant landscape always takes a bit of research. This is because each region in our country determines its own renovation grants, as well as the conditions that you, as a builder, must meet to be eligible. What’s more, municipalities can also come up with additional grants or support themselves.
And finally, grants never last forever. For instance, a new government - and therefore new budget plans - is often accompanied by new or adjusted grant plans. Alternatively, a certain grant suddenly becomes too popular, making it unpayable. It is therefore adjusted or even abolished.
In otherwords, with a little luck – if you apply for a renovation grant at the right time – you can save hundreds or maybe thousands of euros.
Renovation grants in Flanders, Wallonia and the Brussels-Capital Region
As we stated above, each region in our country applies its own grants and associated conditions. The specific work that qualify may also differ. Unsurprisingly, a large number of energy adaptation work is supported, such as:
- Roof work and roof insulation
- Facade and wall insulation
- Floor and basement insulation
- High-performance glass and exterior joinery
- Heating systems
- Renewable energy systems
- etc.
But the list doesn't stop there. Here, we will briefly go over the main renovation grants applicable in the different regions. For the most up-to-date details, we recommend checking the website of the relevant government.
Flanders: Mijn VerbouwPremie (My Renovation Grant) focuses on lower incomes and energy-efficient renovations
In Flanders, you can apply for financial support for renovation work on homes that are at least 15 years old via the Mijn VerbouwPremie. You can submit the application yourself via Mijn Verbouwloket (My Renovation Counter).
- Which kinds of renovation work are eligible for a grant?
- Simulate in advance how much of a grant you could receive.
Please note: from1 July 2025, a number of adjustments will be made to the grant conditions. From now on, then, only energy-related adaptation work would be eligible for a grant. Stair renovations, demolition work or other formal changes to the interior may therefore be out of the question.
According to the new plans, four instead of three income groups are now the basis for calculating the maximum grant amount. Higher-income earners would, in any case, benefit less from financial renovation assistance than before. For example, the highest income category would still be reimbursed up to 20% of an invoice (instead of 40%), while the lowest category would still be reimbursed up to 50%.
Some of the other proposals include:
- People with a second home automatically fall into the highest income category when applying for a grant (unless they rent out the home as social housing);
- Grants for roof insulation are calculated on the basis of an average roof area of 100 m2 rather than the total number of square metres;
- Grants for heat pumps and heat pump boilers remain, while those for solar boilers are gone.
Apart from Mijn Verbouwpremie, you can apply for a number of other renovation grants in Flanders. The most well-known grants are the Vlaamse aanpassingspremie (Flemish Home Adaptation Grant) – aimed at older residents – and the EPC-labelpremie (Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) Label Grant) for major energy-saving work on houses with a poor EPC score. You can also apply for these grants via Mijn Verbouwloket.
Brussels Capital Region: RENOLUTION on hold
In the Brussels-Capital Region, renovation and energy grants fall under one system: the RENOLUTION grants. Unlike in Flanders, your home only needs to be at least ten years old.
Due to the ongoing government formation in Brussels, there is currently a lot of uncertainty about the RENOLUTION grants. For example, it is currently not possible to apply for a grant if you have received the final invoice in 2025. So we will have to wait and see for news on this.

Wallonia: pruning work in Primes Habitation
There is no pause button in Wallonia for renovation grants. However, there are significant adjustments. Since 14 February 2025, the conditions for Primes Habitation have been completely different. And this will certainly remain the case until 1 October 2026. From then on, a new regime – perhaps longer-term – will take effect.
Some of the most important changes include:
- Heating grants and small work grants without audit will disappear;
- The basic amounts on which the grant amount is based will fall by 60% on average. For example, the basic grant for roof renovation will drop from 10 euros per m2 to 4 euros per m2;
- The grant ceiling is also falling for most income categories. Previously, up to 90% of the investment was reimbursed. This is now being reduced to 70% or even 50%. Only the lowest incomes continue to benefit from the old ceiling;
- The highest income category (over EUR 114,000 per year) is no longer entitled to a grant at all;
- On the other hand, there are also various simplifications: certain renovation work no longer needs to take place simultaneously to be eligible for a grant, while for roofing (insulation) work no prior audit is required anymore.

How do I apply for a renovation grant?
You can only apply for a renovation grant once the work has been fully completed and you have received all official invoices. Be sure to check when you need to submit everything by. Otherwise you risk missing out completely. How do I do this?
- Step 1: Collect all necessary documents, such as invoices, certificates from contractors or results of an energy audit;
- Step 2: Submit your grant application via your region’s online platform;
- Step 3: Wait for the confirmation and review of your file;
- Step 4: After approval, you will receive the grant in your account. This usually happens a few weeks to a few months after your application.
Avoid surprises
As you can see, it pays to stay up to date with the latest news when it comes to grants. But no matter how certain or uncertain the outlook is, good preparation remains important.
Read enough about the latest status, get in-depth information from experts or other renovators and prepare a budget exercise that is as precise as possible. This will let you to shift gears immediately when the time is right.
